Southwest China Wildlife Tour

In 2017 summer West China Adventures has organized a journey to explore the Southwest China Area, including the bustling queen city of Chengdu, Dujiangyan Panda Base and Dujiangyan Irrigation System(UNESCO’s world cultural heritage), Tangjiahe Nature Reserve(for protection of wild pandas), supernatural beauty of Jiuzhaigou National Park, Wanglang Reserve and Baihe(white river) Wild Golden Monkey Nature Reserve.
The region where we explore is wild and scenic, with contrasting landscapes and cultures. We’ll meet groups of Tibetan and Baima peoples in Western Sichuan.
The bustling queen city of Chengdu, also capital city of Sichuan Province, is renowned for its tea houses , temple gardens and Sichuan food.
Out of Chengdu, we’ll meet a panda expert in Panda Base.By volunteering,take care of pandas under instructions of the panda center, with a life-time experience. Also visit Dujiangyan Irrigation System, built 2,300 years ago, that’s still in use.
After Dujiangyan, we’ll visit Jiuzhaigou, a picturesque Tibetan area and UNESCO’s world natural heritage, is noted for its snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes, cascades,colorful woods in Autumn ,and Tibetan folkways.It’s a wonderful place for watching birds and other animals.Enjoy hiking through the virgin forest on boardwalks above falls, one has a feeling of coming back to nature.In Baihe, a wild and gorgeous place ,we’ll witness wild golden monkeys. This is a paradise where over 1,600 golden monkeys inhabit . Of course, make your cameras work well for such breathtaking moments.
Although we will visit some remote places on this journey, all of the hotels are comfortable and well-maintained, with modern amenities. The roads we will travel are in good conditions. The itinerary will include short flights between Jiuzhaigou and Chengdu. Otherwise we’ll travel by motor coach.

Schedule: June 6-18, 2018

Day1 Arrive Chengdu,the bustling queen city of West China and capital city of Sichuan Province. Transfer to the hotel. This evening , celebrate your arrival with a Sichuan Food dinner .
Overnight in Chengdu(D)
Day2 Travel to Dujiangyan Panda Base. See giant pandas on the walking tour.Afternoon, we’ll visit Dujiangyan Irrigation System, UNESCO’s world cultural heritage and built 2,300 years ago, which is still in use.
Overnight in Dujiangyan B.L.

Day 3 Volunteering(to work as a Panda keeper assistant under instructions of the panda base).
Afternoon, head back to Chengdu.

Day 4 We’ll have a scenic drive along Min River(the biggest tributary of Yangtze )to the largest area of Qiang Minority People. Explore Taoping Village, known as mysterious “Oriental Old Castle” with a history of more than 2,000 years, and it’s the best-preserved architectural art of Qiang People in the world.On the walking tour, observe the daily life of Qiang People and visit some local families.
Continue the trip to Jiuzhaigou, a beautiful Tibetan area. En route, marvel at awesome views of Tibetan Plateau and also browse a Tibetan village.
Upon arrival, check in the hotel.

Day 5 Full-day excursion to Jiuzhaigou (an area with an elevation of from 8000 feet to 10000 feet), UNESCO’s world natural heritage,with our picnic lunch. This beautiful national park is famed for its falls, turquoise lakes,colorful woods in Autumn, snow-capped mountains and Tibetan folk custom . The green bus will take us to the fork of two valleys.
Enjoy hiking on the boardwalks through the virgin forest or on the trails above falls.
Overnight in Jiuzhaigou(BL)

Day 6 We’ll have a morning scenic drive to Baihe(white river), the nature reserve for main protection of Golden Monkeys. Around 1,600 monkeys inhabit here. Besides Golden Monkeys, giant pandas, leopards , takins , together with taxus and katsura tree are also protected in this area.
Afternoon, head back to Jiuzhaigou

Day 7 Fly back to Chengdu. Drive to Tangjiahe Nature Reserve, where wild pandas are in protection.We’ll drive out of Sichuan Basin, and ascend gradually through the Fujiang river valley and into the foothills of the Minshan Mountains. Much of this area has been restored since the 2008 earthquake, but some evidence remains.A scenic climb up a tributary valley,past fields of mustard and cabbage, will take us to Tangjiahe, a nature reserve designated for endangered mammals, as well as rare pheasants and other wildlife. The temperate conifer forests in this valley are intact and support a high diversity of wild plants including stands of red-bud.

Day 8 Tangjiahe, in the eastern Minshan mountain range,includes forested valleys encircled by high peaks.
Much of the accessible part of the reserve is located at the biologically diverse middle elevations (4,000-6,000 feet) where the forest is surprisingly intact. Tangjiahe Reserve is famous for takins (a relative of the musk ox),giant pandas, a couple of monkey species, more than 200 bird species,and 3,000 plant species.While we may not see the rare, large mammals in such a remote and densely forested enclave,we will certainly have an opportunity for good birding and seeing many plants in bloom.
Explore Xiaocaopo(Short Grass Slope), Shuilingou(Water Running Valley), Linghougu(Smart Monkey Valley) Where we can very possibly see Daurian Redstarts ,shrikes,white-collared Yuhinas, golden pheasants, turtle doves, white-rumped munias and Tibetan Rhesuses or black bears.

Day 9 Today, we’ll have hiking tour to Dacaotang(around 10,000 feet above sea level). Marvel at supernatural beauty of High mountains. Very possibly , we may see takins, black bears and even wild pandas.

Day 10 Drive to Wanglang Nature Reserve(focusing on protection of wild pandas),via Pingwu and Baima Valley From Tangjiahe, we’ll continue up the Fujiang River, passing the historic Chinese town of Pingwu. Gaining elevation throughout the day, we’ll stop in the ethnic minority township of Baima for a barbecue lunch.Here the local people consider themselves similar to, but culturally distinct from, the more prevalent Tibetan groups who live nearby.
Up the hill is our destination, a mountain lodge in Wanglang Nature Reserve. Wanglang, with it’s subalpine forest of conifer and birch, is very scenic and ecologically distinct from Tangjiahe.Trees characteristic of these upper elevations include spruce, fir, juniper, and larch with an under story of rhododendron and arrow bamboo. At this elevation(10,000-11,000 feet), it will still be early spring. The rhododendron will be flowering, and if we are fortunate,we will encounter such early season wildflowers as Primula, Anemone, Gentiana and the beautiful buttercup Oxygraphis glacialis. Afternoon and evening, explore Muyangchang(Sheep-herding Ground) area where possibly Chinese grouses and Chinese impeyans can be seen.

Day 11 Morning is the best time for watching birds like sunbirds, thrushes, warblers, flycatchers. Then We have excursions planned to Wanglang’s high meadow areas, Dawuodang or Zhugengcha. We’ll have opportunities to see
Tibetan antelopes, takins, blue sheep or boars.

Day 12 This morning, still we have a little time for birding.After that, return to Chengdu. Time permits, browse Kuanzhaixiangzi, city mark of Old Chengdu.
This evening, we’ll have a farewell dinner before the nice performance of Sichuan Opera.

Day 13 Transfer to the airport. Trip ends.
