Explore Wild Panda Habitats

Dear Panda Fans,
In 2017, I invite you to join me on a journey to explore china’s most famous panda’s natural habitats, including the bustling queen city of West China , the city along the Southern Silk Road, and the historic city in northwest China and the Capital of P.R.C..
The region where China’s most famous natural habitats of pandas are located is wild and scenic, with amazingly contrasting landscapes and its unique cultures.

Ya’an , with a history of more than 2,300 years, is famous for Rain as well as beautiful girls, fish , marble and currently giant pandas . It was the throat of the Southern Silk Road , and was covered by the Red Army during the Long March. Many cultural relics related are well kept. It is the hub of Sichuan-Tibet and Sichuan-Yunnan. While the most famous part of this area is Bifengxia Panda Reserve, where most of giant pandas from Wolong are relocated after 2008 earthquake. In Bifengxia , with a panda expert, visit Panda’s Hospital and the Breeding Center to make sure to know more behind-the-scene secrets as well as wonderful stories about pandas.

After Ya’an, we’ll head from the south to Northern Sichuan. This part of Sichuan Province neighbouring Shaanxi, Gansu and Tibet, is wild and very scenic. Tangjiahe Nature Reserve, home of life, is the happy land of wild giant pandas and other wildlife. With marvelous mountain views as well as excellent protection of wild pandas, Tangjiahe is designated as “A-level Nature Reserve” by the world Nature Fund. It is one of hot areas for protection of the world’s biodiversity.

Wanglang, supported by WWF, focuses on protection of wild pandas and its ecology system as well as the harmony between people and nature.

Here, we’ll meet Baima ethnic minority people and explore their beautifully unique village, and also experience the nice local food. In the reserve, following a naturalist , do some hiking in the virgin forest , in search of wild pandas.

Upon arrival of historic Xi’an, know more about China’s dynasties. In Yangxian, pay a visit to the memorial of Cailun, inventor of paper. Also witness crested-ibises.While in Foping, where the first brown panda was found, uncover the mystery that a black-white bear was changed brown.

Finally, in historical and cultural city of Beijing, walk the Great Wall to experience the Chinese famous saying “One who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man”. Explore the Forbidden City, Summer Palace to know more about Qing, last dynasty of China. However, do the tour of Hutong to get more about the daily life of common Beijingers.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Chengdu,the bustling queen city of West China and capital city of Sichuan Province. Transfer to the hotel. Leisure for browsing Kuanzhaixiangzi, landmark of the old city. This evening , celebrate your arrival with a Sichuan Food dinner .

Day2.This morning, see Chengdu Panda Eco-park. Then head for Ya’an , with a special experience from Chengdu Plain to the edge of Sichuan Basin along Sichuan-Tibet Road. Upon arrival of Ya’an, known as Rainy City and famed for its fish,beautiful girls and marble, Check in the hotel.

Day3. Meet a panda expert before volunteering (to work as a panda keeper assistant) in Bifengxia Panda Reserve. Time permitting, see panda’s hospital and the breeding base.

Day4 Explore Shangli Town in which many residences constructed in Ming and Qing Dyansities have been still kept, among them Han Family Residence is the most famous. On the walking tour,some original slogans from Long March can be seen.Return to Chengdu.

Day5 Today, we’ll drive out of Sichuan Basin, and ascend gradually through the Fujiang river valley and into the foothills of the Minshan Mountains. Much of this area has been restored since the 2008 earthquake, but some evidence remains.A scenic climb up a tributary valley, past fields of mustard and cabbage, will take us to Tangjiahe, a nature reserve designated for endangered mammals, as well as rare pheasants and other wildlife. The temperate conifer forests in this valley are intact and support a high diversity of wild plants including stands of redbud.

Day6 Tangjiahe Nature Reserve
Tangjiahe, in the eastern Minshan mountain range,includes forested valleys encircled by high peaks. Much of the accessible part of the reserve is located at the biologically diverse middle elevations (4,000-6,000 feet) where the forest is surprisingly intact. Tangjiahe Reserve is famous for takins (a relative of the musk ox),giant pandas, a couple of monkey species, more than 200 bird species,and 3,000 plant species. While we may not see the rare, large mammals in such a remote and densely forested enclave,we will certainly have an opportunity for good birding and seeing many plants in bloom. Today, we will explore the reserveon walks of varying lengths to accommodate group members.

Day7.Drive o Wanglang Nature Reserve,via Pingwu and Baima Valley From Tangjiahe, we’ll continue up the FujiangRiver, passing the historic Chinese town of Pingwu. Gaining elevation throughout the day, we’ll stop in the ethnic minority township of Baima for a barbecue lunch. Here the local people consider themselves similar to, but culturally distinct from, the more prevalent Tibetan groups who live nearby. Up the hill is our destination, a mountain lodge in Wanglang Nature Reserve. Wanglang, with it’s subalpine forest of conifer and birch, is very scenic and ecologically distinct from Tangjiahe.Trees characteristic of these upper elevations includespruce, fir, juniper, and larch with an understory of rhododendron and arrow bamboo. At this elevation(10,000-11,000 feet), it will still be early spring. The rhododendron will be flowering, and if we are fortunate,we will encounter such early season wildflowers as Primula, Anemone, Gentiana and the beautiful buttercup Oxygraphis glacialis. We have afternoon and morning excursions planned to Wanglang’s high meadow areas, Dawuodang or Zhugengcha.

Day8 This morning, we still explore Wanglang Reserve. After lunch, head back to Chengdu.This evening, we’ll enjoy a wonderful performance of “Face changing “and “Flame Spitting -Out” in Sichuan Opera after a farewell dinner.

Day9 Fly to Xi’an,known as “capital of 13 dynasties of China” .It is one of four famous ancient capitals of civilization in the world. Marvle at the world-famous Terracotta Warriors and explore the Wild Goose Pagoda.

Day10 Xi’an/Yangxian

Depart for Yangxian(Splendid County), the World-Only natural habitat for protection of wild crested ibises. See beautiful Crested Ibises with opportunities for photos. Also, visit the memorial of Cailun, inventor of the wolrd-famous paper making and learn about paper making history.

Day11 Yangxian/Foping
This morning, following a naturalist , explore Foping(Buddha’s Place)Nature Reserve, where the first brown giant panda was found.Afternoon, head back to Xi’an

Day12. Fly to Beijing.Walking the Great Wall of China is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and this morning we head to the small town to begin this incredible adventure. After a picnic lunch on the wall we return to Beijing via the equally impressive Ming Tombs . Overnight in Beijing(BLD

Day13 Today, see the Forbidden City and explore the Hutong(a traditional passage between old Beijinger’s residences) .Observe the daily life of the local people on the walking tour while photographing interesting things.At leisure for personal interests. Farewell dinner will be a Peking Duck banquet.
